Prefixes

Definitions

 

Root word: the basic, original word, with no attachments fore or aft.

Prefix: a meaning unit attached to the front of a root word.

Suffix: a meaning unit attached to the end of the root word.

 

Generally speaking, to add a prefix to a root word, just attach it: don’t drop or double any letters.

necessary                                     activate

apply                                             gust

school                                           legal

daughter                                       literate

commend                                      regular

mortal                                           do

arrange                                         contract

establishment                               scribe

active                                            able
