Suffix Rules That Mostly Work... Part One

 

Suffix Rule #1

 

On one-syllable word that end with a single vowel and a consonant: double the final consonant before adding a suffix that starts with a vowel.

Some suffixes that start with vowels:

 

-al       -ing    -ed      -able  -ible   -er      -en      -ee      -est

 

Base Words:

 

Hug -

Sad -

Swim -

Skip -

 

Suffix Rule #2

 

On words of more than one syllable that end with single vowel and a consonant and are accented on the last syllable, double the final consonant before adding a suffix that starts with a vowel.

 

Base Word:

 

refer-                                           gossip-

occur-                                          forbid-

omit -                                           confer-

control-                                        travel-

regret-                                         permit-

deposit-                                       final-                 

commit-                                       begin-

 

EXCEPTION: transferred
